Diet and nutrition are somewhere interrelated. A healthy diet includes nutritious foods which consist of healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner. Even though, both the concept are connected with each other, their representatives aren’t. On the contrary, a dietitian and a nutritionist are two different people dealing with two different aspects. Diet is what a person should eat throughout a day to stay fit and healthy. On the other hand, nutrition is the amount of nutrient supplied to the body every day.
Dietitians are people who monitor, supervise and plan your daily diet. For instance, if you are a patient of diabetes, gastrointestinal disorder, and food allergies. The dietitian will prescribe a diet to curb these health conditions. Dietitians are required in all kinds of medical facilities, such as hospitals, sports centres, health centres, clinics, etc. They are responsible for your healthy breakfast to the healthy dinner plan. Your lifestyle, age, food preferences, etc are an important factor for dietitians. All these factors are taken into account to plan your diet.
Nutritionists have no idea of how to plan a diet. Thus they can’t do it. As a result, they can only recommend healthy food choices and eating habits. On the other hand, nutritionists cannot recommend medical patients any diet. They are known for prescribing public health nutrition, community health development and tertiary nutritional education. A nutritionist can be a nutrition consultant or adviser, health promotion officer, nutrition coordinator and food technologist.
There are certain skills required to become a dietitian or a nutritionist. These skills are applicable in the practical world and not in theories. The skills are:
- Organizational abilities
- Interest in health and diet
- Understanding people belonging to various background
Communication is the only medium to reach out to people. For example, a dietitian or nutritionist need to communicate with the patient to explain the need for a nutritious diet. Through communication, they motivate people. A nutritious diet includes a healthy breakfast, a proper lunch, some nutritious snacks, and a filling dinner.
Eligibility for Dietetics and Nutrition Courses
The dietetics and nutrition courses are a diploma, U.G. and P.G. courses. You can apply for anyone of it after the undergraduate or postgraduate and diploma level. A good number of universities are offering these courses across the world. You can apply on the basis of your merit. A couple of universities conduct entrance exams as well for admission.
To become a nutritionist or to do a M.Sc. course, firstly, you need to be a graduate. Secondly, people belonging from science background prefer to opt for these courses. For instance, students from backgrounds like Chemistry, Hotel Management, Microbiology, Medicine and Home Science prefer taking up dietetics and nutrition courses.
Nutrition and Dietetics Careers
Although, it is not a very popular career option, but has a lot of scope. There are a number of professional positions as a dietitian. These are consultant dietitians, clinical dietitians, community dietitians and management dietitians. In the case of nutritionists, the options are food nutrition officer in hospitals, nutrition counselor in health agencies and fitness clubs, etc.
All the above factors aim at a healthy diet. Your eating habits need to improve if you wish to stay fit. As a result, starting from a healthy breakfast to a healthy dinner, you need to maintain your diet.
